A Few Tips for Choosing the Best Type of Mower for Your Lawn

The mower you choose for your lawn is an investment in your home, and one that should last for many years. However, not all mowers are alike and some will work better for your lawn in particular, while purchasing the most expensive model on the market may simply be a waste of money. Note a few differences between mowers and some tips for choosing the best type of mower for your lawn in particular.

For small, simple lawns

If your lawn is small and simple, meaning it has nothing more than soft grass and not brush or thick weeds that ever need to be cut, you might opt for an electric mower. This type often works with a battery that you charge before use so don't assume you'll need to work with extension cords when you cut the grass. Self-propelled models will assist with pulling the mower over the lawn and a mulching variety will mean no cleanup.

A robotic mower can also be used for small lawns with soft grass; this mower follows a pattern set out by wires that are buried underground. You simply place the robotic unit at a certain starting point and turn it on, and it will follow the signals from those wires, even returning to a charging station when necessary.

For larger lawns and those with dense brush

If you have a large lawn, opt for a riding mower, either one with a seat or one with a standing platform behind it. This makes it easier to mow those large areas and also reduces the risk of getting hit with flying debris from a thick and dense area of brush. If your lawn has many landscaping features and tight corners, choose a zero-turn mower. This mower swivels at the seat area so you don't need to actually back it up around those tight corners or curves.

For lawns with thick weeds or dense brush to be cut, choose a lawn tractor. This model looks like a small tractor and will have blades between the front and back tires. The heavy-duty body of the tractor will allow you to more easily cut through dense brush or weeds, and the thick, short body will help to keep you safely in the seat with less chance of the mower tipping. You can also use a tractor mower for adding accessories, such as a thrush mower blade. These blades are even more powerful than standard grass cutting blades and are meant for thick brush.
