2 Clever Design Tricks To Try When Renovating A Small Ensuite

Ensuite bathrooms have become a virtually ubiquitous feature in modern Australian homes. In newly built homes, they are often quite roomy and provide plenty of space to play with. In older homes, the ensuite is more commonly a very small space that doesn't provide the same options for design or layout as modern versions.

If you're renovating a small ensuite, then you're no doubt hoping to make the most of the space you have available and create a fresh, modern and attractive new look. Fortunately, a small room doesn't mean you can't achieve a spacious and open look; it just means that you need to be clever with the design. Here are two ways that you can maximise space and minimise clutter in your new ensuite bathroom.

1. Use a frameless shower screen

Shower screens are a necessity in an ensuite, but choosing the right one can make a massive difference to the success of the room. A frameless shower screen does away with all of the superfluous extras that regular shower screens have that hinder a clean line of sight through the room and add unnecessary visual interruptions.

You can take the minimalist approach to shower screens a step further by creating a walk-in shower with no door. Use a single panelled shower screen to create the shower alcove instead. This lets you do away with door handles and hinges, which add to the visual clutter in a small ensuite. It also gives you more flexibility in your layout because you won't need to factor in the swing required for a screen to open and close.

2. Be smart with your vanity

Vanities are another essential component in an ensuite, and they're also another tool for creating an airy and open feel in a small bathroom. Opt for a floating vanity unit with a longer, more shallow profile to keep it looking slimline and to keep the floor area open and uncluttered, which provides the illusion of more space.

Adding some shallow, hidden shelving behind the vanity mirror is another clever design option when space is at a premium. This means that you'll have plenty of storage space without needing to use up any more of your wall area. Storage is key in a small bathroom and will prevent your vanity surface from becoming a repository for bathroom items that encroach on the space, making it look untidy and feel cramped.
